A HISTORIC church converted into a community centre after a massive fundraising drive is to host a special screening of Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The film, organised by the Bemerton Film Society will take place at St John’s Place in Lower Bemerton at 7.15pm on Wednesday, February 8. It is a free open gala event celebrating the film society’s move into the new community centre. Organisers chose the film because it stars Hugh Grant, the nephew of a local resident, in one of his first major roles, and because the venue continues to hold weddings and funerals.

A member of the society’s committee said: “The film society has been in existence for several years, but until now we have had our monthly screenings in the local school.

“We are thrilled to be able to transfer to St John’s Place, and to celebrate this we are holding a special screening of Four Weddings and a Funeral. This will be an opportunity not only to enjoy this highly entertaining film, but also to see the interior of this wonderfully restored building. The building is warm and the seats are comfortable.”

St John’s Place in Lower Bemerton underwent a £650k renovation transforming the interior of Bemerton St John church into a new community space. For the film night on Wednesday, the doors open at 7.15pm with a start time of 7.45pm. There will be drinks and nibbles available and voluntary donations are welcome. Future screenings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at the same time. Tickets cost £5
