ECHO’S End is a touching tale with Wiltshire at its heart.

The play, which has been written by local author and playwright Barney Norris, is set on the edge of Salisbury Plain in 1915 and is the tale of two families and the seismic changes that altered their lives and the identity of their county when the war arrives on their doorstep.

John and Anna, whose families have been living and working the land for generations, find themselves caught up in the turmoil.

The play is wonderfully written and directed. Each character adds something different to the story.

The relationship between John (Tom Byrne) and Anna (Katie Moore) translates well on stage. And there were strong performances from David Beames, Sadie Shimmin, Robin Soans and Oliver Hembrough.

I particularly loved the character of Jasper played by Soans, who brings some light hearted moments to the play especially during the banter between him and Arnold, played by Beames.

Echo’s End is a brilliant example of the wealth of talent coming out of Salisbury. Norris and director Alice Hamilton both grew up in Salisbury and met through Salisbury Playhouse’s Stage 65 Youth Theatre. They formed their own theatre company whilst studying at Oxford University.

The set design was exquisite and brings a touch of the countryside to the main stage of Salisbury Playhouse. It is the first time I’ve ever seen a set with its own river.

The lighting of Echo’s End also deserves a mention as it makes the scene transitions effortless and the silhouettes of the actors on stage are truly beautiful – adding to the natural, outdoors feel.

Echo’s End runs at Salisbury Playhouse until April 15. For tickets call 01722 320 333 or go to salisburyplayhouse.com.
