EFFIE’S Burning is a theatre production exploring mental health and shines a light on the fabric of our society.

Effie, who has lived in mental health institutions since the age of thirteen, has been admitted to hospital with severe burns. Treating her is Dr Ruth Kovacs, who finds in Effie’s extraordinary story of injustice and official callousness the key to her own suppressed anger and power.

Playwright Val Windsor says: “For me, Effie’s Burning is a play about injustice – the injustice of tidying away people who offend against society’s norms, the injustice of the powerful making arbitrary decisions about the powerless, and, as ever, the ingrained injustice of misogyny.

“The play was commissioned by Manchester Library Theatre for their lunchtime drama season and has had many productions since. I’m delighted that Angie Gray is bringing it to life again, particularly in the current climate of austerity and in view of the funding cuts for mental and social care funding.”

Effie’s Burning is on Friday, October 6 at Salisbury Arts Centre, 7.30pm.
