A PHOTOGRAPHIC exhibition depicting the everyday lives of mothers and their children in rural Kenya is on display in the city.

The Mother and Child Exhibition is at St Thomas's Church and is open to the public until Sunday (October 15).

It has been organised by Bath charity Send a Cow which works with smallholder families in some of the poorest parts of Africa.

The images were taken by Swedish photographer, Fredrik Lerneryd, who shadowed two young mothers, Beatrice and Ruth, who have worked their way out of poverty and are now able to provide for their families with support from Send a Cow.

Exhibition organiser Ann Hatton from Send a Cow said: ‘‘From fetching water out of a local well, to harvesting vegetables from their fields, this exhibition offers a rare insight into the women farmers of east Africa who grow most of the region’s food and yet are massively undervalued and under-resourced.

‘‘Women like Beatrice and Ruth who are featured are living proof that poverty and hungry in Africa are not inevitable. With the right support and training, people can transform their lives and give their children the best start in lives. We really hope that local people will come along, engage with exhibition and feel inspired by these women’s stories and lives.’’

The exhibition is part of the charity’s Mother and Child appeal which is raising funds to support struggling mothers in east Africa.

The campaign also has the backing of the UK Government who are doubling all donations made to the appeal before December 31.
