HANSEL is a beautiful play that takes you on a funny, intriguing and sad journey, writes Katy Griffin.

The set was incredible and transformed the Salberg into a beautiful woodland setting complete with trees that the actors can climb.

The natural sounds of bird songs adds to the setting and brings a tranquility and peacefulness to the production and enhances the theatre experience.

The set doubles up as the rural cottage deep in the Cornish woods. The transition between the two settings is effortless and makes the production flow.

The wonderful writing of Shiona Morton was executed superbly by the cast of Elizabeth Counsell as the hoarding mother Edith, Zara Ramm as her daughter Viv and Lee Rufford as the Boy.

The intimate space of the Salberg works really well to tell this story which explores family relationships, homelessness and rural isolation.

Hansel was well directed by Jo Newman.

I look forward to seeing more work from Shiona Morton who won the 2017 Theatre Fest West Writers’ Prize, which was chosen from hundreds of entries from across the south west.

Hansel runs at Salisbury Playhouse until Saturday, March 24. For tickets or more information call 01722 320 333 or go to salisburyplayhouse.com
