NEW musical Moonfleet has brought tales of smugglers, treasure and ghosts of marauding pirates to life at Salisbury Playhouse, writes Katy Griffin.

The production is based on the novel by J Meade Falkner and set amongst the cliffs, caves and downs of 18th century Dorset village of Moonfleet.

Haunted by the ghost Blackbeard, Moonfleet is a village of intrigue and drama where smugglers lurk. Against this backdrop, young orphan John Trenchard dreams of Blackbeard’s lost treasure.

The set and costumes were amazing and brought the tale of pirates and smugglers to life.

The singing and acting from all the cast was top notch, especially from Rebecca Lock, who put in a superb performance as Isabelle Block, the leader of a smuggling gang, and Ryan Heenan who played John Trenchard.

But I did feel that the music was too loud at times and overpowered the singing.

The musical had plenty of action with gun fights and even shipwrecks mixed in with the musical numbers.

Moonfleet is a brilliant theatrical offering from director Gareth Machin and composer Russell Hepplewhite.

Moonfleet runs in the Main House at Salisbury Playhouse until Saturday, May 5. For tickets call the box office on 01722 320333 or go to salisburyplayhouse.com
