SALISBURY mezzo-soprano Sophia Brumfitt is performing as part of an evening of music and words from the period of poet-priest George Herbert (1593-1633).
Awake, My Lute is being held at St John’s Place in Lower Bemerton on Sunday (June 3), 4pm.
Sophia is performing alongside lutenist Din Ghani. The two musicians are members of Musicke in the Ayre, who perform concerts of C16/17 vocal music accompanied by lute and related instruments such as archlute, baroque guitar, vihuela, viola da gamba
The evening will include settings by contemporary composers of not only the poems of George Herbert, but also of members of his wider family. There will also be lute solos from the lute book of George’s brother Edward of Cherbury.
Among the composers featured are Robert Jones (1577-1617), Henry Lawes (1595-1662), John Jenkins (1592-1678) and John Blow (1649-1708).
Interspersed with the music will be readings by Sonia Woolley of some of Herbert’s works and related writings.
Admission is free with a retiring collection.
