VISITORS to Salisbury and South Wiltshire museum are being greeted by a charming mosaic camel, pictured right.
The work of Carolyn King, who is one of 22 contemporary mosaic artists currently exhibiting in the museum gallery, The Navigator - as the camel is called - is by far the most quirky.
Curated by mosaic artist Robert Field, the exhibition is themed The Four Elements embracing Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
The Navigator, made from recycled mirror glass, was inspired by Carolyn's trip to Morocco where she saw many camels, and was impressed by the fact the camel is able to survive virtually anywhere, able to withstand most of nature's elements.
Mosaics have been used in art in centuries and this new exhibition highlights the range available to this medium.
Visitors should not just be restricted to looking at the mosaics exhibition as the museum houses its own mosaic, albeit historical, with a section of Roman mosaic pavement from Downton on permanent display.
The Four Elements continues at the museum in the Cathedral Close until June 7 with a workshop for children being run next Wednesday, April 16.
