Anne Morris looks ahead to the new season at Salisbury's City Hall

COMEDY, classical music, Russian dance, folk, popular music and tribute shows from Elvis and Queen to Frank Sinatra, all feature in the autumn season at Salisbury's City Hall.

The city centre venue reopens after its summer break on Tuesday with medium Colin Fry, and regulars will notice a big difference, particularly in the foyer which has had a bit of a revamp and touch of paint.

Continuing the season next Friday sees comedian Michael McIntyre stop off on his hectic tour to the City Hall.

The popular stand-up, star of television's Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, is known for his strong rapport with the audience. You can expect an evening of personal anecdotes, observation and unadulterated wit as he forgoes the gimmicks and gets on with what he does best - making people laugh.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra returns on September 19 with a concert of truly beautiful music, including two works to celebrate the 50th anniversary of English composer, Vaughan Williams. The orchestra will perform the romantic piece, The Lark Ascending with solo violin taken by director Duncan Riddle and the orchestral piece, Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus. Completing the programme is Mendelssohn's Sinfonia No. 9 and Beethoven's Symphony No. 8.

Other comedians booked this autumn include Jimmy Carr with his new show Joke Technician and Russell Howard with his Dingledodies show.

Folk big band Bellowhead makes their first appearance on the City Hall stage in October. The 11 piece band fronted by folk musicians John Spiers and Jon Boden were at this summer's Larmer Tree Festival and went down a treat with their big band take on traditional English folk music.

Sure to be a spectacle is the Don Cossacks State Dance Company from Russia, making its first UK tour.

More than 40 dancers and musicians will entertain on October 17 and this is bound to be one of the most colourful shows of the season.
