Coward's witty tale of passion

NOEL Coward’s witty yet passionate love story, Private Lives, opens the spring/summer season in the main house at Salisbury Playhouse next week.

Directed by the Playhouse’s artistic director Philip Wilson, the design is by Colin Falconer who promises a stunning Art Deco-style set. With lighting de- signer Chris Davey, this reunites the creative team behind the Playhouse’s successful production of Terence Rattigan’s The Winslow Boy last year.

The story is simple – divorcees Elyot and Amanda are on honeymoon with their new spouses but unknowingly in adjacent hotel suites.

A chance encounter on their balconies on the first night on honeymoon acts as a sharp reminder that they cannot live together, or apart, and sparks start to fly.

Nicholas Boulton returns to the Playhouse as Elyot, having appeared in Restoration in 2009.

Susie Trayling plays Amanda and Charlotte Longfield plays Louise. Charlotte returns to the Playhouse having also starred in The Winslow Boy and is a former Stage ’65 member.

H Private Lives opens next Thursday, and runs until Saturday, February 20. Tickets are available from the box office on 01722 320333.

H The Playhouse is offering a series of workshops especially for adults. These cover theatre directing, acting techniques and writing for the theatre. The aim is to deliver an introductory insight into the craft of making theatre and they are suitable for beginners, amateur practitioners or just lovers of the theatre who like to experience a glimpse of backstage activity .

Led by Playhouse practitioners, the first is a workshop on theatre directing next Saturday, January 23 from 1-4pm (price £30). This is followed by acting techniques on March 27 and Writing for the Theatre on May 15. To book, call the theatre box office.
