PUPILS of Exeter House Special School and The Valley Unit at Woodford Valley School have been working with musicians and animateurs of La Folia (formerly Sarum Orchestra) in a series of workshops on a collaborative project based on Wagner’s The Ring Cycle.

This is the first year of a four-year project in the two schools devising a new music theatre version of the Ring Cycle myths.

Artistic director Howard Moody said: “Apart from an old Jewish tune, a couple of Verdi tunes and some instrumental links based on Wagner’s music, every note and word of the performance was devised, imagined and uttered by the participants.

“The process allowed the pupils the space and time to respond to the huge themes of the myths which inspired Wagner.”

These myths begin as Wotan finds he cannot pay for his recently-built Valhalla and takes financial advice from Alberich, stealing the Rhinegold (which has already been stolen from the Rhinemaidens).

On Tuesday the pupils performed The Ring – Part 1 at Salisbury Arts Centre.
