JOOLS HOLLAND AND HIS RHYTHM & BLUES ORCHESTRA, LARMER TREE FESTIVAL

BAREFOOT and big-voiced Sandie Shaw was the special guest of Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra on Wednesday night – and so opened Larmer Tree Festival's 21st year.

The princess of pop and icon of the 1960s is currently touring with Holland and his orchestra, her first tour in 25 years.

And the crowd wildly welcomed her back as she rolled back the years and gave a new take on her 1967 Eurovision Song Contest winner, Puppet on a String, turning it into a soul ballad complete with Memphis horns.

Shaw's hairstyle was virtually unchanged and the 64-year-old icon even donned a pair of shorts, with tights of course, for her energetic performances of (There's) Always Something There To Remind Me and Girl Don’t come on the main stage.

As the moon rose, the audience danced the night away to an evening of boogie and blues, ska and reggae enthusiasts cheered by the sight of trombonist Rico Rodriguez, the Jamaican legend responsible for the cult Eighties album This Man is Forward.

And just when you thought things couldn't get any better, powerhouse soul singer Ruby Turner took to the stage.

Holland completed the perfectly paced two hour set with an encore called appropriately, Enjoy Yourself.
