Community spirit shines at concert
9:33am Thursday 11th October 2012 in Entertainments
COMMUNITY spirit is flourishing in the Chalke Valley if the concert in All Saints’ Church is anything to go by.
The packed audience on Saturday evening were treated to instrumental and choral ensembles, folk music, handbells and readings.
The evening opened with a couple of short jazzy numbers on saxophones played by Hannah Gilbert and Alicia King, accompanied by Mark Gilbert on the piano.
Later, Bob Montgomery played two charming pieces on oboe and cor anglais, accompanied by Richard Seal, producing a pure and brilliant tone.
The final instrumental ensemble was Dominic Price on violin and Susie Lamb on piano, playing two well-matched pieces by Fauré and Kreisler.
The Coombe Bissett School Handbell Ringers gave a simple but plangent sequence of scales, which cleverly evolved through switching the bells between the players. Paul Sampson, guitar and vocals, provided an opportunity for enthusiastic audience participation in the refrain of Flanders & Swann’s familiar Hippopotamus song.
Musical offerings were interspersed with readings.
Two choirs sang – the Bishopstone Singers and the Chalke Valley Ladies’ Choir.
The concert was a fundraiser in aid of the Chalke Valley Link Scheme, which provides lifts to those in need.
The Chalke Valley can be proud of its home-grown talent, which came together for community benefit and the pleasure of all those attending.
