RIVER Bourne Community Farm was buzzing with the sounds of the West Country as The Wurzels thrilled an excitable audience on Saturday.

Despite dark clouds looming for most of the day, the outdoor event stayed dry as hundreds of fans enjoyed the music.

There was a nice blend of folk, blues and sing-a-long classics from Midnight Flyers, Stone Donkey Pilots, Dan Sowerby Band, Drop The Fish and Lady Winwood’s Maggot as the build-up to the main act advanced throughout the afternoon and evening.

A converted steel barn housed the stage and The Wurzels started their set with Blackbird, with the crowd in fine voice from the start.

Front man Pete Budd and accordion player Tommy Banner interacted with the crowd explaining their songs and building suspense.

Cider Drinker and a cover of the Kaiser Chiefs’ Ruby raised the decibel level as the audience joined in full song – many will be trying to forget the strip show Banner “treated” the crowd to!

And what else could they end with but Combine Harvester?

I'm sure the fans left thinking it was a great event and what a wonderful addition the farm has been to the local music circuit.

Farm manager Jane Wilkinson said: “What a great event, it was brilliant to have the Wurzels on the farm – they said it was one of their best gigs of the year and were very impressed with the crowd and the setting. We are looking forward to our next music event which is Live at the Farm on Sunday, May 24 2015.”

The farm is also hosting a Bierfest on Saturday, 27 September 27, organised by the Xanten Twinning Association. Details of this and other farm events can be found on the farm website at riverbournecommunity farm.org.uk and The Wurzels return to Salisbury on Friday, December 5 at Salisbury Arts Centre.

Firs Fest was hailed a success as more than a dozen acts formed the weekend line-up which featured local heroes Barely Legal and Not Dead Yet sharing the stage with London based retro-rockers, Wild Honey and Cambridge indie quartet Derecho. Proceedings were brought to a colourful climax with a firework display finalé to top off the Saturday night. Be sure to check out one of Salisbury’s best-kept secrets in 2015 as the event celebrates its tenth year.

The winner of the Wurzels ticket competition was DB Williams of Queensbury Road, Salisbury.
