FRANK TURNER AND THE SLEEPING SOULS
Salisbury City Hall

There's something really special about a Frank Turner gig which makes the whole experience uplifting and energising.

From the moment he and his band, The Sleeping Souls, walk on stage, the excitement in the crowd of loyal and devoted fans is palpable and you can't help but be swept along.Turner is relatively local, hailing from Winchester, and described his gig at the City Hall on Saturday as a bit of a homecoming.

He hasn't played in Salisbury since 2006, when he ended up playing for three people due to a mix-up about the venue.

He's come a long way since then, playing at the 02 Arena and the London Olympics opening ceremony and, unsurprisingly, Saturday's gig was sold out.

Having released his fifth solo album, Tape Deck Heart, last year, Turner has an abundance of material to treat his fans to and he covered a lot of ground in his fast-paced energetic set.

His folk-punk songs are simplistic but heartfelt and, even if you don't know the words that well, you want to sing and clap along.

I Still Believe and Recovery had the whole room jumping and there is a real sense of inclusiveness at a Frank Turner gig.

He even treated us to some new material the band is working on for the next album, which does make you feel like you're part of a special music community.

A mention also has to go to his support act, Koo Koo Kanga Roo, a duo from Minnesota whose comic dance songs had the crowd in stitches and got everyone joining in with their crazy dances. They were a lot of fun.
