Dangerous drivers speeding past school

I AM the school crossing patrol lady for Wyndham Park School and I am writing about a worrying incident that happened to me.

One afternoon I walked out into the middle of Somerset Road, arms out, fully visible, ready to help someone cross over as I have been doing for several years now.

I heard and saw a motorist turning the corner and I knew through instinct the vehicle had no intention of stopping, as it was travelling too fast, and all I could do was stand still in the hope it saw me and made an attempt to avoid me. I turned sideways to let the vehicle pass.

Once it had passed I felt quite shaken and couldn’t believe this had just happened. Luckily the person I was helping to cross didn’t step out into the road until the motorist had gone.

Thank goodness there weren’t any children otherwise there would certainly have been a fatality.

Minutes later I walked out into the middle of the road to let a grandmother cross and yet another speeding motorist came from the same direction, stopping only inches away from my legs. Luckily the lady crossed safely.

Please can this serve as a reminder that motorists should slow down and show consideration when going past a school otherwise there will be a death – hopefully not mine.
