Problem with applications

I noted among the list of planning applications (Journal, January 23) submissions by Tesco to have a 'pod' erected at the front of the Southampton Road store which would contain a dry cleaning outlet, a watch repair service, key cutting and a shoe repair service and to erect all the signage to promote and advertise these services.

If allowed, this will have a detrimental effect on the people who offer these services in Salisbury city centre and in all probability lead to more empty shops in our city. It is to be hoped that our planning committee will have the strength to block these applications in order to keep some vitality in the city.

True but since Waitrose has a dry cleaner and shoe repair service what argument will the planners be able to use?
