Thanks for flooding help

First published in Letters

I would like to thank all those who helped Wilton's volunteer flood warden Anthony Brown-Hovelt during the recent emergency following a call from Spire FM and BBC radio for volunteers to fill sandbags. They ranged in age from 10 to 75.

I would also like to thank Wiltshire Search and Rescue volunteers under the leadership of Gail Leaman who did a great job delivering the sandbags to where they were needed.

Also thank you to the local landscape gardener who diverted his staff to fill sandbags. We could not save some properties but without the prompt action of the flood warden the situation would have been a lot worse.

The sandbags piled up in Crow Lane did hold back a lot of the water and, yes, part of Crow Lane had to be closed for a time but without sandbagging there would have been a repeat of the photo you recently published of floods in North Street January 1915.

Cllr Phil Matthews, Mayor of Wilton
