We need better shops

I SEE yet again someone has written in the Journal about restaurants taking over everywhere (Postbag, May 22).

How right they are - it’s about time that the people of Salisbury had their say for once.

But – and this is a big but – will the councils of our city listen to us?

Everyone is fed up with mentioning that they want Primark, Wilkinsons, Peacocks, The Range – other towns have all these shops and what have we got?

None of these, because the council control too much of this.

They have the stores you mention and, people want, in towns and cities nearby. However we are chastised for mentioning the names of these towns and cities as we are then wrongfully accused of supporting and advertising these towns and cities over and above Salisbury by certain councillors. This is not the case obviously, it's simply a fact of having to go to towns and cities that have the shops you want, that's all. Simple.

'will the councils of our city listen to us?'

Never because it's always blocked all the time. I do go elsewhere for shopping eg Bournemouth, Poole. Someone tried once to get a Wilkinson here a while ago, but was rudely told by a Councillor that it would lower the tone of the city! Yet they allowed a pound shop here.

I think the tone of the city has been lowered anyway because it's stuck in the past and way behind other towns and cities.
