Making a mess of grass-cutting

I UNDERSAND the concerns about grass cutting in Salisbury and I have been writing to Wiltshire Council and councillors about this as Bishopdown Farm and London Road were looking terrible.

I notice now that an attempt has been made to remedy the situation in London Road.

But Balfour Beatty, which has this £24m contract, is letting all taxpayers down.

I have just come back from Dartford and as one drives down the A343 from the A303 and travels through Hampshire all the verges have been cut.

As soon as we pass the sign “Wiltshire welcomes you” there is no sign of the grass on the verges being cut.

And this must be the case on all roads.

Balfour Beatty has a huge task to catch up, but unless they do so their contract should be terminated.

Michael Claydon, Salisbury

I HAVE noticed the grass cutting on the Bemerton Heath estate – they cut the grass last week and may I say what a mess.

Is it too much trouble for them to rake the grass cuttings off after they have cut it?

It is a disgrace – tufts of grass left all stuck up, edges not cut and where there is a pavement edge the grass has not been trimmed at all.

If you can’t do the job right, don’t do it at all.

There is no tidiness with the council but they can’t blame the tools, it’s a human doing the work.

C Bell, Salisbury

On the A30 A338 and A36 many of the Wiltshire signs have been removed, presumably our council is ashamed of its welcome!!

When they do cut it's left to blow around. I'm assured this is the contract so no hope of a better service!

The cheapest option is not always the best value.

Mr Balfour and Mr Beatty have been an absolute dusgrace this year with their grass cutting - or rather, lack of grass cutting.

Whoever at County Hall gave them this contract should hang their head in shame.

It appears to be a shambles, when they eventually got around to cutting the grass in the park opposite Bourne Hill, it was left in a hell of a state with bits missed, great tufts sticking up, the same as London Road, with none of the banks done...

What I dont understand is, when you outsource a service, you TUPE transfer the staff and transfer all of the assets.

SO Balforur Beatty should have the people, tools and knowledge to run the service as it has been run succesfully for years.

Only once they have had experience of running the contract and meeting associated service levels, make changes to improve service, keep their staff motivated and meet their commercial goals.

One assumes none of this has happened, but its basic stuff!

Cant complain about the grass cutting between St Marks and Castle road roundabouts. There isn't any.

Over time the condition of some of the walls has deteriorated and add to that the height of the long grass and weeds, makes our city look scruffy and neglected to people who are just passing through.

I hope you are not proud of your efforts, Conservative run Wiltshire Council, because you are responsible for running Salisbury down.

We may have a shiny market square, but the approach to the city has the appearance of a slum in places.

They are doing some work on the roadside in Churchill way opposite Waitrose. The grass on the verge is higher than the safety cones that the workers are using.

Please keep an eye on very young children if you are in the area as they may get lost in the long grass.
