Strange light over Nomansland

I READ with interest the account of the ‘strange light in sky’ last week.

On the following day from the incident mentioned, I saw a very similar object at Nomansland, which is of course not far from the original sighting in Downton . It was at around 10.15pm moving from the Salisbury direction over the village.

It was a large glowing ball (that looked like it was possibly on fire), completely silent, moving slowly. It stopped for a few moments, then turned and disappeared over the trees. I was, and still am, unable to explain it.

Well considering how close this area is to the Army Training area of Salisbury Plain this "large glowing ball (that looked like it was possibly on fire), completely silent, moving slowly)" was more than likely a night-time flare they use that is equivalent to 3million candle power and is designed to light up the whole area - these are silent, slow moving & suddenly go out...

It does sound a bit like a Schermuly Flare - (as described by Macogan) awesome piece of kit that lights up a huge amount of area with a greeny white light usually.

Though it is more likely to be a chinese lantern in that area!

As has already been noted Nomansland is a significant distance away from the training area on Salisbury Plain. Is there a policy regarding setting of flairs over the New Forest? This seems a possible explanation:
