Where will cars park if railway station is full?

IN August 1999 Graham Eccles, then managing director of South West Trains, advised me that 120 new car parking spaces were to be provided in the former east goods yard and to the north of the station in Salisbury.

Of course, none of this promised development has materialised and today there is still no remaining space for anyone wishing to park and travel after about 8am. This effectively means that it becomes necessary to leave cars in the long stay area of the Central Car Park before taking the train. It would also be possible to use park and ride but only with plenty of available time and the car being recovered before the sites are closed in the early evening.

Now, the new plans for the redevelopment of the Central Car Park involve the removal of all long stay parking.

I have written twice to cllr Richard Clewer since the beginning of January asking him to advise where, in the future, anyone should leave their car when finding the railway station car park full.

Yes, a coherent integrated transport policy for Salisbury will help retail and business in Salisbury. So, why is the opportunity being wasted?
The market square redevelopment, the Maltings redevelopment and the closure of the bus station all give ample opportunity to put into place a transport system that will serve both business and the community.
The point made by Mr Strong fits into the bigger picture and, how the future proposals fall short of providing anything except a 9 til 5 ad-hoc gamble of how to get from A to B.

I entirely agree that we need to look at the question of how much city centre parking we need and where it should be located.

There are lots of issues here both around ensuring people can come into the city to shop, use the station, visit etc. But also around congestion, air quality and the need to encourage some traffic to use park and ride.

We have made sure that other buses support park and ride, letting people get there once the main service stops and that the sites are open so you can get your car out of them. That could be a long term solution for commuters. That does not mean that we don't need to retain enough city centre parking.

What is needed here is debate on the issue. Some of that is happening through the Vision which is taking on the job of reveiwing and directing the strategy for transport, particularly in the City Centre. We also need to make sure the consultation on the Maltings gets responses on parking. I would urge everyone to pass on their views to both the Vision and Stanhope as well as to Wiltshire Council so we can have an informed debate and end up with enough parking to support the City Centre but not so much that we end up locked up in a constant traffic jam and with poor air quality.

On a personal level I also think we need to look at stopping cars from using the city centre as a cut through, something the Vision is also taking on.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Clewer

Yes, Mr Clewer. All good points I am sure. But how about answering Alan Strong's perfectly clear question. Where are we to park after 8am if we need to travel to London once the Long Stay has gone? Could we have a suggestion that doesn't involve air quality and Park and Ride (no good if returning from London after 7 pm).

No-one who works in London is going to get a bus to get a train, come on Cllr. Do you? Or Mr Glen?
