Easy solution to all of these road problems
4:18pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Postbag
MOST of the extra problems caused by ‘road improvements’ have been anticipated by motorists but ignored by planners.
Some could be remedied easily enough, but still nothing is done.
Take the new Longbarrow roundabout. Not only does it patently fail to improve flow on the A303, but it now blocks access towards Shrewton and Stonehenge from Salisbury, since there is no hatching to stop A303 vehicles stopping on the roundabout itself.
Nicholas Cooper (Postbag, August 22) is spot on with his comment about the growing menace of ‘tactical drivers’ deliberately blocking the right-hand lane to prevent motorists merging at the end of the A36 dual carriageway.
This also happens on the westbound A303 after Countess Roundabout, where it causes untold stress, as well as making vehicles back up onto the roundabout itself.
Merge in turn signs might help a little, but this is a dangerous, provocative and illegal practice that should be dealt with under the new police powers.
TONY BAXTER, Shrewton
