Contain these traffic fascists
4:20pm Wednesday 28th August 2013 in Postbag
LAST year’s Salisbury Summer Spectacular was a triumph.
Combining the Diamond Jubilee celebrations with the arrival of the Olympic torch in Salisbury resulted in a fantastic day which drew deserved credit to the authorities involved.
Hudson’s Field provided ample parking, and the event was a resounding success.
This year, however, was a depressing confirmation of how our local authorities are attempting to force us to toe their line.
Hudson’s Field was reserved for disabled parking only, and was therefore always more than 95 per cent empty.
A ‘tow-away’ zone including Stratford-sub- Castle and Phillips Lane and the complete closure of Fairfield Road and Chatham Close gave the traffic wardens a field day to write out tickets to their hearts’ content, or to meet their monthly targets.
Even the lay-by opposite the Old Castle pub had a ‘lay-by closed’ sign, although I was reassured to see that it had been completely ignored and was full of parked cars.
The celebrations were good, the fireworks at the end were truly spectacular, and this event will go from strength to strength if only the traffic fascists can be contained.
