IN answer to the question posed in last week’s Journal Postbag, yes the dragonfly is laying eggs (ovipositing). It is a southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea) which likes to lay eggs in rotting vegetation. The eggs should hatch next spring and I don’t know if the larvae would be able to climb out of the flowerpot, so maybe your correspondent could lay the pot on its side just in case.
