Lipreading classes will be useful and fun
11:15am Thursday 19th September 2013 in Postbag
MANY Journal readers will be experiencing difficulties hearing clearly, and may be putting off doing something about it because there seems to be something of a stigma attached to it, which you don’t find with some other disabilities. You don’t have to be old for this to happen: increasingly, younger people are having hearing difficulties.
As we have just had a National Lipreading Awareness Week, I would like to alert readers to the availability of lipreading classes, free in the Journal area.
We all lipread to a certain extent, especially in noisy situations, without even thinking about it, and developing this skill at a lipreading class can dramatically improve how much you understand, with or without a hearing aid, restoring your confidence, independence and self-esteem.
You will also be shown other strategies for coping with hearing loss. It’s not heavy; we have a lot of fun.
