Spiralling executive pay cannot be justified
11:21am Thursday 19th September 2013 in Postbag
I AM calling for Wiltshire Council to be open and publish the new pay rates for the 18 service directors.
When the council was set up in 2009 service directors must have applied for their jobs and accepted a certain salary level.
Councils awarding high levels of increases will mean the median point will subsequently increase and we will be left with spiralling executive pay.
Some of us are not particularly impressed with Wiltshire Council’s performance over the last four years, for example its nonexistent sustainable transport policy for Salisbury.
Executive directors are experts at putting forward a case for pay increases – I have experienced this in the past when I was a Cambridgeshire county councillor and a member of Cambridgeshire Police Authority.
When council executives threaten to leave over pay, you call their bluff.
I cannot see how these massive increases can be justified when every other public service worker is having their pay increase capped at one per cent and has to live with falling living standards.
We are also told we are all in this era of austerity together, but apparently not those at the top of the tree.
This is just another example of those who have most getting, more and middle and lower income earners getting less.
