Last thing we need is more car parks
3:45pm Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Postbag
NO sooner has work started on new laybys to accommodate buses in Amesbury post bus station closure then a planning application is submitted for change of use of said bus station.
And what do they want the land for?
Believe it or not, a car park for 33 cars and a handful of motorcycles.
Someone really is having a laugh at our expense.
We are to be subjected to all the upheaval of our town centre to construct two completely inadequate bus lay-bys just so 33 extra parking spaces can be created in place of our bus station.
Like many local residents, I have refused to use our car parks since charges were introduced and see no reason to change that policy. The development of the old Coop store will not change that, not for me or for many others.
At lunchtime today I could count the number of cars in the central car park on my fingers, so why do we need more parking spaces?
We were robbed, first by Salisbury District Council then by Wiltshire County Council. Give us back our free car park.
How on earth do they expect to make any money if their charges are to be in keeping with those already established in Amesbury?
If residents will not pay the fees now what difference will adding extra spaces make?
Let them provide a ‘drive-thru’ for the buses at the front of the plot and re-instate our roads. It will only cost about six spaces.
Change the shape of the motorcycle bays and nothing else will be lost. Most of all it will prevent further congestion on Amesbury’s roads.
The last thing Amesbury needs right now is more traffic chaos.
