Driving away tourism
1:56pm Wednesday 9th October 2013 in Postbag
AS a guide, I recently led a tower tour at the cathedral, where two of the participating visitors were tourists from Nottingham, enjoying a few days away in Salisbury. They were staying at the Cathedral Hotel which has no car park, so had parked in the central car park at £7.40 per day.
The hotel could give them no reductions in parking costs as often happens in other cities and countries.
Surely it is not beyond the wit of Wiltshire Council to work out some system to reduce parking costs for overnight tourist visitors to the city? Again, there seem to be no joined-up strategies. Wiltshire Council has policies to encourage tourists and, it seems, policies to drive them away.
