I WAS bemused by the letter sent in by Mr Sargent criticising SSE for not carrying out regular tree cutting (Postbag, January 2).
Surely he answered himself when he referred to the old practice of “requesting land owners to look after their trees”. If all tree owners acted responsibly, stormy weather would not see so many inconvenienced.
Nationalised industries may very well have employed staff that could carry out a public service and have rarely-used kit on standby for emergency situations.
Private companies – because that is what our utilities are – cannot afford such luxuries unless we are prepared to pay.
Of course any supply interruptions are particularly unpleasant over a holiday period, but I expect the SSE staff would prefer to be appreciated for their hard work in trying in dangerous circumstances, rather than criticised for things outside of their control.
