Negative impact of parking charges

First published in Postbag

WE came from Bromley in Kent six months ago to live in Salisbury and we truly love it here.

But the day after we arrived, we went to Sainsbury's for our first shopping trip.

We were not only shocked at the appalling condition of the car park itself but also by the extortionate charges. No wonder Salisbury has a disproportionate number of empty shops.

Very soon parking charges will seriously affect the attitude of visitors as well as shoppers. Just where does the money go that should be spent on the local infrastructure?

The general condition of both roads and footpaths in Salisbury is disgraceful and, in many cases, dangerous.

Why not introduce an annual parking permit for local people similar to that which is already very successful in Fordingbridge?

Incidentally, parking in Bromley is approximately 50 per cent cheaper than it is in Salisbury.
