Do we need more shops?

First published in Postbag

I ACCEPT I was wrong and the apparently all the shops in the Maltings are now let (Postbag, April 24).

However the principle that a walk across the city (appreciating that it changes almost daily) will reveal empty shops, so do we need more shops?

As regards the Sainsbury’s application, if you replace a porous surface, eg grass, with a non-porous one such as concrete, it aggravates the flood risk.Having a half empty central car park and Sainsbury’s wanting to enlarge, perhaps we need a bit of lateral thinking.

Salisbury does not have hotel capacity that makes it possible for the city to grow tourism overnight stays. Without this any efforts to grow a night-time economy to replace retail in the city centre is doomed to failure. Where is the joined-up thinking? What Salisbury needs is a vibrant city centre but all we see is endless arguments about supermarkets at a time when the supermarket companies themselves are admitting that their offering is being replaced by the internet. Come-on council, what are you doing to support the City...Stanhope or bust, surely not?
