Farmers striving to give cows the best possible life

I FELT compelled to respond to the letter in the Journal (Postbag, June 21) about our dairy cows. I think the writer of this letter and Journal readers should be made aware that there are many family dairy farms in the UK (mine included) who strive to give their animals the best life while maintaining a viable business and getting quality milk onto the supermarket shelves.

Our cows enjoy a long grazing season from March to October and in the winter months are comfortably sheltered and well fed in purpose built accommodation.

I appreciate that zero grazing happens but in general most farmers do everything they can to keep their cows in the best possible conditions, after all they wouldn’t produce milk if they didn’t. I’m sure I’m not alone in my sentiments. Here is a photograph of one of our ladies enjoying the dandelions in our fresh green pastures.
