Strange lights in the sky

IN reply to the letter in last week’s Journal describing a strange light in the sky over Downton .

I live in Gillingham, Dorset and indeed saw the same phenomenon that evening.

Not having seen such an object in the evening sky before I called my wife out to witness it.

When first seen it was directly over Gillingham and slowly moving in a south easterly direction, a constant glowing orange ball with no noise whatsoever. I watched it until it disappeared from view over the surrounding rooftops.

What was it? A mystery.

PAUL CUMBERLAND, Gillingham

DEAR Journal readers, I think I may be able to offer an explanation for the mysterious moving lights in the night sky, which seem to be causing paranoia.

I think what many of you are witnessing are Chinese lanterns – you may have already heard of them? They make no noise as they float through the sky and when they burn out the light disappears and the unlit lantern falls to the ground – the bane of many farmers.

No supernatural activity – just manmade objects used fairly widely in this country for celebrations.
