Cash boost for sports

SPORT in south Wiltshire is to get a cash boost to try and encourage more people to pick up a racquet, kick a ball or try out any other activity that appeals.

A £105,000 package has been designed to create more opportunities for sport and active recreation, with Sport England providing £31,000 over two years.

The balance of the funding comes from the newly formed community sport network, the Salisbury Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SSPAA), which will be launched at the City Hall on Tuesday (May 13).

Cllr Brian Dalton, Salisbury District Council's portfolio holder for community initiatives, said; "This is an exciting time for sport and physical activity in this district.

"Working with others to improve the health and wellbeing of local people is one of this council's key priorities. This scheme should help us to provide more opportunities for people to be physically active or involved in the organisation of sport and recreation.

SSPA members include Salisbury Area Sport, the Avon Valley and Salisbury School Sports Partnerships, Wessex Community Action, Amesbury Sports Centre, South Wiltshire Strategic Alliance (the Local Strategic Partnership for the district) the Wiltshire and Swindon Activity and Sports Partnership and Salisbury District Council The SSPAA is the first network in the south west to have been awarded Community Investment Funding from Sport England.
