| Visitors braved the sea of mud at last year's show |
DISMAL weather and plummeting visitor numbers at last year's New Forest Show hasn't dampened the
enthusiasm for this year's event.
The two-day torrential downpour left visitor numbers dipping to 68,750 - almost 20,000 down on the previous year - but still the show went on.
In true British style, people from the New Forest and further afield put on a stiff upper lip and a pair of wellingtons to enjoy the three-day spectacular.
As stalls sold out of popular-sized wellies and umbrellas, crowds braved a sea of mud to see the traditional spectacle of animals, plants, crafts and, indeed, everything the region has to
offer.
The rain turned the main walkways into rivers of brown, but this failed to stop the enjoyment.
Already 80 per cent of the trade stands have rebooked for this year, with enquiries for new stands exceeding expectations.
Recent figures suggest that the show is estimated to contribute £12m a year to the local economy.
David Yates, New Forest District Council's chief executive, said: "I am absolutely convinced that the New Forest and Hampshire Show brings
enormous economic value to the area and unites the local business community."
Proline Equestrian Construction, BHG Marine and Quincey Upholsterers are just three of the local companies whose sales have been boosted by attending the country show.
John Collis, managing director at Proline, said that the company has increased its turnover by 45 per cent since it came to the show three years
ago, and is now able to offer a nationwide service building arenas, stable bases and race tracks.
This year's show will be held at New Park, Brockenhurst, from Tuesday, July 29, to Thursday, July 31.
