European athletes visit Tisbury

ATHLETES with mental disabilities from all over Europe, including Austria, Slovakia and The Czech Republic, visited Tisbury Leisure Centre on Thursday for an evening of rest before continuing on their 1,491-mile journey as part of a cross-Europe relay run.

Initially established as a one-off event by the Vienna-based Integrative Meetings of Friends, the run has gone from strength to strength and this year is the tenth run. It aims to encourage the integration of the disabled into society and its success has enabled it to visit the UK for the first time this year.

119 participants from over 6 countries are taking part.

Tisbury Leisure Centre provided free accommodation for the group on 15 May enabling them to relax and unwind with a traditional English supper of fish and chips.

The relay began in Denmark on 12 May and travelled 223 miles before arriving at the leisure centre. The journey continued after a visit to Stonehenge on Friday, with the runners going on to Wales, Ireland and Scotland. The run is scheduled to finish in Brussels in front of the EU Parliament on 29 May.
