Guiding hand in sight challenge
3:00pm Monday 29th October 2012 in News
VERWOOD mayor Simon Gibson took part in the Lions Club World Sight Day challenge, walking around the town centre blindfolded to understand the challenges facing people with visual impairments.
Simon was joined by his escort Sue Mayling, Guide Lauren Coleman, and her friend Katt Ground, who were helped by members of Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club.
The club also set up a stall on Ferrett Green to hand out information about its good causes.
Cllr Gibson said: “It was a very surreal experience, even though I knew the route that we walked very well, it is totally different when you can't see where you are going.
“The work that the Lions club do for this every year is excellent and even though it was difficult, I was very glad to get the chance to help raise awareness for their campaign.”
Ms Mayling said: “Even after a short time you do get a feeling for how difficult simple journeys become for people with visual impairments.”
