CHILDREN who are interested in finding out more about becoming a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral are being invited to a workshop on Saturday, December 8.

The event, which is being run ahead of the chorister auditions next year, is being lead by director of music, David Halls and takes place between 11am and noon at The Cathedral School.

“Parents have told us that this workshop is extremely useful as we advise on how best to prepare for the voice trials early in the new year,” he said.

“We take the children through all the musical elements which will be tested including how to practise a singing piece, vocal range exercises, picking out notes in chords, clapping a rhythm, singing back a melodic phrase and sight-reading. Parents are warmly encouraged to observe and there is also the opportunity to ask questions.”

The next voice trials for children currently in school years 3 and 4 are on Saturday, January 19 for boys and Saturday, February 2 for girls.

Further details about the workshop and forthcoming voice trials are available from the department of liturgy and music at chorister.recruitment@salcath.co.uk or on 07587 826622.

Informal individual pre-auditions with Mr Halls can also be arranged.
