A RETAINED firefighter from Salisbury has retired after 33 years.

Chris Oldham, 52, was presented with a certificate of service at Salisbury Fire Station on November 12. Mr Oldham always wanted to be a firefighter as a child and he became a retained firefighter in 1979, alongside his fulltime job as a lorry driver.

“The best thing about it was not knowing what you were going to when the bleeper went off,” he said. “One job is never the same as another.”

Mr Oldham, who lives in Castle Road, said he is looking forward to spending his free time out and about.

“I was always on call when I wasn’t working,” he said. “It will be nice to go somewhere and not have to think about it.”

“I’ve enjoyed being in the service and the memories will always be with me,” he added.
