SEWAGE soup and water samples fascinated youngsters at a south Wiltshire school.

Children at Wylye Valley School welcomed Duncan Forbes and Gillian Smith from Wessex Water into their lessons last week in a visit organised by the Wylye World Warriors, the school’s eco group.

The day began with a whole school assembly looking at the water cycle and why water is so important in our daily lives. Pupils also got to have a go at testing some water samples and looked at sewage soup, which showed them the state of water when it leaves people’s homes.

“It has been a very successful day today. Wessex Water have been very helpful in encouraging the pupils in how to save water and raise awareness of water wastage,” said Maia Poolman, chairman of the Wylye World Warriors.

The eco group monitors the schools weekly water consumption and the school has made changes such as ensuring unnecessary lights are switched off and paper, cans and other materials are all recycled.

The hard work of the Eco Group and whole school was recognised in February 2012 when the school was awarded Green Flag status.
