CHRISTMAS shoppers will be able to use two of Salisbury’s park and ride sites in the evenings after a deal was struck between Wiltshire Council and Wilts & Dorset bus company.

People who park at the sites can do their late night shopping and use Wilts & Dorset’s red buses to return to their cars. The last buses back to Salisbury’s park and ride sites normally depart from the city centre at 6.40pm on weekdays and at 6.30pm on Saturdays. Now people will be able to stay in the city beyond 9pm.

Dick Tonge, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for public transport, said: “We realise people sometimes want to stay in town a little bit later than the standard park and ride buses run, so we have come up with a way of providing later buses back to two of our sites, just in time for late night Christmas shopping. If this scheme is a success we will look into extending to other sites.”

Anyone who has parked at the Wilton or London Road park and ride sites will be able to use their ticket to return to the car park between 7pm and 10pm on local bus services r2 and r3. These services are operated by the red Wilts & Dorset buses every day except Sundays and public holidays.

Park and ride users should show their ticket to the driver and ask to be dropped off at the park and ride car park. They will be able to press the button by the barrier to leave the car park.

Bus r2 to Bishopdown and Laverstock picks up at bus stop Q on Endless Street, opposite the bus station, at 7.25pm, 7.55pm, 8.25pm and 9.25pm Passengers should ask the driver to drop them off at the bus stop opposite the park and ride site on London Road.
