NOT just a sight for summer, Sarum Morris dancers are getting in the Christmas spirit with performances of traditional mummers’ plays in village pubs around Salisbury.
The plays are rarely performed these days but Sarum Morris has been keeping the tradition alive for the past 30 years.
Dancer Dickie Dolding said: “Mummers’ plays are ridiculous re-enactments. The acting wouldn’t get any plaudits at the Playhouse and the costumes are outrageous, but we are able to present it in a very humorous way.”
The short play features King George and Father Christmas and is full of fun rhymes and battles galore, with money raised at performances going to charity.
On Wednesday, December 12, they will be performing at the Fox & Goose in Coombe Bissett at 7.30pm, before going on to the Yew Tree Inn at Odstock and The Radnor Arms at Nunton.
