A BLUE plaque honouring the 18th century artist George Beare has been unveiled by the Salisbury Civic Society at The Chapel Nightclub in Salisbury.

The portrait painter, who died in 1749, lived in a house on the same site, and some of his paintings are in the Guildhall and Salisbury Museum.

The plaque was unveiled by Dr Brian Allen, recently retired director of the Paul Mellon Centre for the Study of British Art, and a distinguished authority on 18th century British painting.
