IF anything epitomises the problems Salisbury’s planners must face it is the stark contrast between those who think the Christmas market is a great idea and the negative tone of some letters.

Of course the market is not perfect first time but, if it gets the support from Salisbury’s residents it deserves, it will get better and better.

Instead of whining, if the gainsayers can think more constructively, perhaps welcome change, we might even get around to agreeing a plan to realise the market square’s huge potential. Meanwhile, well done and thank you to those who brought us the excellent Christmas market this year.

MIKE HUNTLEY, Alderbury

THE Christmas market outside the Guildhall was a very welcome addition to Salisbury. There was a great variety of goods on sale, and plenty of food stalls too.

However, it was a shame that all the stalls were coralled within rather unwelcoming metal barriers in a confined space.

Wouldn't it be better if the market was situated in The Close? There would be more space to walk around the stalls within a beautiful setting. The High Street shops would also benefit from people walking through on their way to the market.

Perhaps Salisbury City Council would think about this for 2013.
