THE winners of the Salisbury Civic Society Conservation Awards Scheme 2012 have been announced.

There were six awards given, with a further two commendations: l Judges felt that the decision to move toilet and other facilities at St Martin’s Church, Salisbury, and to create a lantern to allow light into the porch, were highly successful.

* At the Former Salisbury Infirmary, judges said that a project to repair the stone inscription commemorating the building of the hospital was carried out to meticulous standards, using entirely appropriate materials and techniques.

* Work to Harmony House in Harnham Road retains the extension’s overall form, but opened up the space to create a new kitchen/dining area. It also altered the lower end to create a veranda that projects slightly over the river.

* The mural on the previously blank concrete walls of the Milford Bridge underpass, depicting buildings and scenes that would have been visible prior to the road’s construction, was felt to be a major improvement.

* At Samways in Alvediston, a careful approach was adopted to improvements to both the interior and exterior of the house, with high quality work allied to an understanding of what needed to be retained.

* When creating a new foyer at the late Victorian building that houses Downton Primary School, the need not to challenge its character was given high priority. The foyer creates good access while leaving the original building completely visible, and only a later extension partly obscured.

* Commendations were awarded to Myles Place, Salisbury, and the Beckford Arms, Fonthill Gifford.
