PEOPLE in Salisbury are being invited to help shape Wiltshire Council’s budget for the coming tax year at an interactive roadshow next month.

Everyone who visits the roadshow, in the Guildhall Square, will be asked where they would make savings and where they would invest if they had control of the council’s budget.

They will also be asked their views on what the council has done well and where it could do better following its first four years as a unitary authority.

While the subject of car parking may be raised at the roadshow, the council has asked that the Journal clarifies the headline for the front page of the edition of January 17.

A council spokesman said: “It implied that the council had generated an additional income of £2.8million from car parking charges. This wasn’t the case.

“The revenue generated from car parking has remained unchanged for the last three years. The headline relates to an accounting practice based on the valuation of car parking land across Wiltshire and is not income generated. We hope that the headline does not inadvertently influence people’s feedback at the forthcoming roadshow.”

All the feedback received at the roadshow will be collated and will help to influence the council’s direction, future plans and budget setting. Council leader Jane Scott said: “We want as many people to visit us in Salisbury and tell us what they think. We need to find out what our tax payers want us to prioritise in the future. We look forward to meeting local people and hearing their views about the council and the services we provide.

“We want to know what people consider that we’ve done well so we can continue to improve, and we want to hear where we can do better.”

The roadshow will take place taking place on Tuesday, February 5 from 11am to 1pm outside the Guildhall, and cabinet members and council staff will be on hand to answer any questions people may have and to provide hot refreshments.
