New committee breathes life into social club
A VILLAGE social club that has been welcoming families for 90 years is to be revamped and relaunched after the community rallied round to save it.
Boscombe Social Club was struggling to carry on due to dwindling business, but after a major awareness-raising drive by a new committee membership has doubled to 100 and pledges of help are coming in to revamp the ageing wooden building in Tidworth Road.
The committee also secured a loan from trustee Cliff Stevens to rewire it, and members, who already run the bar and events for nothing, plan to redecorate.
And they are hoping builders and other tradesmen can help them out with materials and time so they can modernise the place and attract even more custom for the club, which offers low prices and a range of fun events for all ages, including quiz nights, bingo, discos, skittles and children’s parties.
The ambitious committee also hopes to create a fun room for the children where the club’s two pool tables are now, and to update the facilities for members, who are aged from two to 90.
Rosie Townsend, 20, is one of the younger committee members. She said: “It’s like a big family here.
“We’ve been coming for ten years and there are people who have been coming here for decades. Our oldest member, Edna Light, is the same age as the club.
“The club had got into a rut, and not many people knew about it. But the new committee is determined to keep it going.”
