Stroke exercise programme is a success
AN exercise programme designed to help Wiltshire stroke sufferers achieve personal goals, has been such a success it could be used as a model elsewhere.
Since September 2011, 61 stroke survivors in the county have taken part in tailored programmes, organised by Wiltshire Council and health partners, which encourage them to achieve personal targets over 12 weeks.
After completing the course some people who used to walk with a stick are now able to walk unaided or can walk more quickly and confidently.
The programme is suitable for any stroke survivor who is able to walk either unaided, or with a stick or frame, and must be able to complete 10 metres.
It involves exercises in a seating and standing position, which can be adapted for the individual needs of the participant.
Classes are based at leisure centres in Salisbury, Trowbridge, Chippenham and Marlborough with new classes starting in Durrington, Westbury and Devizes in April.
