THE 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War is next year, and plans are underway to ensure it is commemorated in Wiltshire.

The Wiltshire Great War Centenary Group, comprising a wide range of groups and organisations including Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum, Salisbury Playhouse, Wiltshire Archaeology Field Group and Wiltshire Council, is hoping to see a countywide programme of events running from 2014 through to 2019.

The Imperial War Museum is working with organisations such as the Wiltshire group across the world to create a “vibrant global programme of cultural events and activities, and digital platforms which will enable millions of people across the world to discover more about life in the First World War”.

And Josie Gale, centenary project manager at the museum, will be joining representatives of the group and the organisations it encompasses at an open meeting being held in Devizes next week to share information about events being planned so far.

It is hoped that any interested individuals or organisations will some along to find out more about getting involved, including museums, arts organisations, town and parish councils, schools, youth and veterans groups, history groups and choirs.

The meeting will be held at Devizes School from 6.30pm to 9pm on Thursday, March 21.
